WORLD CLASS LOGISTICS INFRASTRUCTURE

San Antonio has long been the beneficiary of a world class transportation infrastructure.  With five military bases, San Antonio's transportation network was designed and built with the aid of the U.S. military.  Today, this infrastructure is designed to handle traffic volume as much as 3 times the size of San Antonio's present population.  This results in a transportation system free of congestion and unnecessary delays.

Highway Network

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has planned, designed, built and maintains a highway system consisting of 1,247 square miles or 3,106 lane miles in San Antonio-Bexar County.

San Antonio serves as the hub of the South Texas Highway system with Interstates 10, 35, and 37 connecting with both U.S. coasts, Canada and Mexico. San Antonio is also served by four U.S. Highways connecting to key cities throughout the United States and Mexico, including Dallas, Houston, Laredo, Corpus Christi and Monterrey, Mexico. With nearly 70% of all trade within North America moving by truck, San Antonio is ideally situated to be a logistical hub for trade between the U.S. and Mexico.

In addition, loops 410 and 1604 circle the city and provide additional highway access to motorists to connect to their destinations. Major improvement projects are underway on Loop 410 and US 281 and on Loop 410 and IH 10. The fourth segment of Wurzbach Parkway, from N.W. Military Highway to West Ave. is also underway.

Currently, Loop 410 is being expanded from six to ten lanes across north San Antonio. In addition, the expansion of IH 35 between San Antonio and Austin from six to eight lanes continues.

TransGuide, TxDOT's traffic management system, covers 63 miles of the highway system in San Antonio. TransGuide uses a system of cameras and electronic signs to provide traffic information to motorists on a real time basis.

Air Cargo

San Antonio has two airports within a 10-12 minute drive from the Central Business District, both of which can provide air cargo service: Port Authority of San Antonio at Kelly USA (www.kellyusa.com) and the San Antonio International Airport (http://www.sanantonio.gov/aviation/).

The Port Authority of San Antonio at KellyUSA

With an 11,500 ft. runway, the airport is scheduled to open for international cargo flights in the first quarter of 2007.  This airport is ready for "heavy lift" cargo aircraft and heavy-duty equipment deliveries. In addition, KellyUSA can provide space for aircraft parking and "build-to-suit" product storage of heavy equipment or a sortation center. As a conveniently located, cost-efficient hub, consider the Port’s air cargo advantages.

  • Proximity to aviation maintenance and aerospace support activities
  • Airfield and ramps can accommodate 747-400
  • Space for cargo terminal development and access to existing warehouse space
  • An excellent location for air cargo operations to Mexico and South American markets and benefits of added fuel savings
  • Airport Planning
  • Access to interstate highways and the Union Pacific railroad
  • Foreign Trade Zone No. 80-10
