Foreign Trade Zone No. 107 was granted by the Foreign Trade Zones Board to the Iowa Foreign Trade Zone Corporation, an Iowa non-profit corporation affiliated with the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, Des Moines, Iowa, in April, 1980.

Goal

The goal of the Iowa Foreign Trade Zone is to promote economic development through Des Moines through promotion and utilization of Foreign Trade Zone No. 107 by assisting businesses to be more competitive in the global market.  FTZ No. 107 assists in the economic development of the community by providing a customs management tool to importers and exporters.

There are three ways to take advantage of FTZ 107.  A company can have its products handled by a zone operator, become a separate zone user under an operator, or a company can itself become a zone operator at one of the existing zone sites. If none of the existing zone sites is suitable, the grantee can apply to the FTZ Beard for a modification, expansion or subzone.

Centennial Warehouse has been designated as the ONLY Foreign Trade Zone in the Central Iowa area and operated as a public warehouse since 1980 and is located in Des Moines, Iowa, 1 mile from Interstate Highways 35 and 80.

Des Moines International Airport, Iowa

The Des Moines International Airport (DMIA) is the only Port of Entry located in Iowa.  As a Port of Entry, Des Moines International Airport has on-site U.S. Customs and U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors.  A new customs facility has recently been completed for the convenience of shippers and travelers.  This fact means that the DMIA is the only location in Iowa for international goods and passengers to enter the state.  A Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ No. 107) is located near the DMIA.  A FTZ allows for certain goods to be repacked or assembled with other components and then exported without having to go through formal customs procedures.

DMIA is a fully functioning intermodal facility.  No currently active rail lines directly serve DMIA and, therefore, all intermodal activities at DMIA are between truck and air.  United Parcel Service, Federal Express, and Emery Worldwide are air freight service providers at DMIA.  Such air freight activities generate truck traffic volumes that place a high demand on the roadway system in and around DMIA.

In addition to over 1,000,000 square feet of parking apron dedicated to air cargo, and approximately 100,000 square feet of warehouse space, the cargo facilities of the Des Moines International Airport continue to grow.  Plans are in for an additional 200,000 square feet of airside warehouse space and approximately 2,000,000 square feet of additional air cargo aircraft parking.
